The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), is seeking a Senior Quantum Applications Engineer to drive innovation and accelerate the development of quantum computing technologies in the UK. Based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire, this full-time permanent role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of quantum research and technology. The successful candidate will join the Quantum Applications Team within NQCC’s Innovation function, focusing on solving practical problems using quantum computing, developing and executing quantum algorithms, and contributing to quantum readiness initiatives. Responsibilities include leading technical projects, coding quantum computers using SDKs, benchmarking prototype systems, developing mathematical models and libraries, and publishing non-confidential results. Candidates should hold a PhD or have equivalent experience in quantum computing, physics, or related fields, possess strong programming skills in Python and other classical or quantum languages, and have a proven track record of research and technical delivery. The role requires excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, with opportunities to collaborate with experts from academia, government, and industry.
