About the job

Flux Computing is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of precision opto-mechanical systems critical to the performance of its Optical Tensor Processing Units (OTPUs). The role involves designing and developing mechanical assemblies for optical systems, including precision mounts, alignment stages, and thermal enclosures for photonic and electronic components, while collaborating closely with optical, electronic, and packaging engineers to meet demanding performance, thermal, and alignment specifications. Responsibilities include developing CAD models and detailed mechanical drawings using tools such as SolidWorks or Siemens NX, leading thermal and structural analysis of mechanical components and assemblies to ensure reliability under vibration, shock, and temperature conditions, evaluating materials and surface finishes for thermal management, mechanical stability, and optical compatibility, interfacing with vendors and manufacturing teams for prototype fabrication and design iterations, developing jigs, fixtures, and alignment tools to streamline optical assembly and validation processes, supporting environmental and reliability testing, creating comprehensive documentation including BOMs, tolerance analyses, and assembly instructions, and collaborating across disciplines to ensure mechanical design supports electrical, optical, and thermal performance goals in compact, integrated hardware. Candidates should have 7+ years of experience in mechanical design, particularly in opto-mechanical systems and high-precision assemblies, proficiency in 3D CAD tools, strong understanding of materials, tolerances, thermal properties, and structural mechanics relevant to optical systems, and experience transitioning designs from concept to manufacture. A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required; Master’s or PhD preferred. Compensation includes competitive salary and stock options, visa sponsorship, full relocation support, healthcare and dental coverage, high-spec tech setups, personal company card for tools, healthy chef-cooked dinners, monthly off-site socials, 25 days paid holiday plus UK bank holidays, access to in-house 3D printer, Cycle2work scheme, pension plan, and other benefits.
