UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is hiring a Senior Functional Safety Engineer for the Science and Technology Facilities Council at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire. This full-time, open-ended role offers a salary of £56,509 per annum, with flexible working options available. The engineer will work on the ISIS Neutron and Muon source facility, delivering interlock systems to protect personnel from hazards including ionising radiation, high voltage, and lasers. Responsibilities include designing and delivering custom safety systems, conducting risk assessments, managing design and review meetings, working through the full safety lifecycle (concept to decommissioning), and overseeing technical staff. Candidates should hold a degree or HND in a relevant field (or have equivalent experience), with knowledge of British and European safety standards like ISO 12100 and IEC 62061, and experience in PLC and relay-based system design. Proficiency in CAD tools (AutoCAD Electrical/EPLAN) and documentation systems is essential. Strong communication and leadership skills are required, and experience managing engineers is preferred.
