Cancer Research UK is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Fundraising & Trading portfolio, primarily focusing on developing the back-end of their Online Fundraising Web Application using PHP and Symfony. The role involves delivering high-quality, scalable software solutions, developing REST APIs, writing clean and maintainable code, mentoring junior engineers, collaborating cross-functionally with Product Managers, UX Designers, Business Analysts, Agile Coaches, Architects, and other Engineers, applying Lean and Agile principles, ensuring accessibility, performance, security, and reliability of applications, and driving technical excellence across the team. Candidates should have proven experience in PHP and Symfony (or similar frameworks such as Drupal or Laravel), knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript, experience with large-scale code repositories, the ability to run critical services in production, design highly available, scalable and secure solutions, and prior experience in senior or lead engineering roles. The role provides autonomy to lead new feature development, make key technical decisions, and contribute to the charity’s modern tech stack initiatives. Full visa sponsorship can be considered for the right candidate. The position is hybrid, based in Stratford, London, with 1–2 days per week in the office, and offers a salary of £54,000–£64,000 plus benefits.
