The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is hiring a Scientific Software Engineer to support the HiLUX project at the Central Laser Facility in Didcot, Oxfordshire. This fixed-term role, running until March 31, 2027, offers a salary between £56,509 and £62,159 per annum and can be full-time or part-time (minimum 30 hours/week). The HiLUX project, backed by £17M in funding, will revolutionize ultrafast laser spectroscopy by upgrading laboratories, laser systems, detectors, and data-handling tools, making it the world’s only open-access facility for such a broad range of spectroscopies. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the engineer will develop data acquisition and analysis software for advanced spectroscopy techniques, such as time-resolved infrared, Raman, photoemission, and sum-frequency generation. Key responsibilities include building software using Python (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, etc.), integrating with control systems like EPICS, implementing real-time spectral analysis, and applying advanced data techniques including PCA and machine learning. The role demands experience in software development best practices (e.g., CI/CD, Agile, version control), project ownership from concept to deployment, and strong communication skills. The successful candidate will engage with scientists, software engineers, and international partners to deliver robust, scalable software that enables groundbreaking scientific research in areas like biomedicine, energy storage, and environmental science. UK visa sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route is available, with potential reimbursement of Home Office application fees.
