About the job

This exciting research fellowship at the University of Leeds offers an ambitious researcher with a background in liquid crystals the opportunity to work in collaboration with Merck Electronics KGa, a global leader in liquid crystal technologies. The successful candidate, holding a PhD (or having submitted their thesis), will have strong expertise in experimental physics and/or engineering, with hands-on experience in liquid crystal optics, electro-optics, device fabrication, modelling, and characterisation. The role will focus on developing and optimising innovative liquid crystal-based technologies for augmented and virtual reality, involving the design, fabrication, and testing of advanced devices. In addition to conducting cutting-edge research, the fellow will play a key role in communication, including writing high-impact research papers, contributing to patent applications, presenting findings, and liaising regularly with the company both in the UK and Germany. This position offers the chance to work alongside a distinguished team of academics and industry experts, contribute to impactful projects, and enhance future display technologies. The post also provides a comprehensive benefits package, including 42 days of annual leave, a generous pension scheme, access to state-of-the-art gym and wellbeing facilities, professional learning opportunities, childcare, travel schemes, and more. The role is full-time, based at Leeds Main Campus within the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences, School of Physics & Astronomy, with flexibility for hybrid working. Sponsorship may be available through the Skilled Worker visa route (with possible salary concessions) or the Global Talent visa, making this an excellent career-building opportunity for both UK and international researchers.
