Orbex is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to serve as Technical Authority for the structural development and analysis of their Launch Vehicle, Orbex Prime. This role involves overseeing flight structure development projects, managing technical performance, schedules, and costs, and participating in every phase from concept to manufacturing and flight. Experience in finely toleranced flight structures for the space industry, particularly in composite failure mode analysis and launch vibration environments, is highly desirable. Orbex is a leading European micro-launch company with facilities in Forres, Scotland and Copenhagen, Denmark. Their Prime vehicle is preparing for launch from Space Hub Sutherland, with over €122m of financing and backing from UKSA and ESA. Orbex develops its own engines and carbon composite tanks, runs software and avionics labs, and is committed to sustainability with innovations that reduce carbon footprint by up to 96%. The company is fast-paced and startup-like, promoting responsibility, communication, and collaboration. Responsibilities include ownership of structural requirements, team coordination, analysis, mentoring, documentation, testing, and validation. A minimum Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and 8+ years of structural design and testing experience in high-reliability industries is required. Candidates should be proficient in tools such as FEA, CAD, and simulation software, and experienced with ECSS, CAA, or EASA standards. This on-site position is based in Forres, near the Scottish Highlands, offering access to outdoor activities and natural beauty.
