The Principal Laboratory Research Scientist role at the Francis Crick Institute involves leading the design, development, and delivery of advanced hardware–software systems for biomedical research, working at the intersection of engineering and biology within the Making Lab Science Technology Platform. The role includes driving end-to-end technology development—from scoping and prototyping to system integration, testing, and optimization—while collaborating with multidisciplinary research teams across neuroscience, structural biology, and bioengineering. Responsibilities include mentoring junior researchers, training scientists, managing lab operations, and contributing to publications and project dissemination. Candidates must have strong hands-on experience in systems design, programming (Python/Linux and/or C++), electronics, mechanical CAD, rapid prototyping, and automation or control systems such as robotics.
