The University of Leeds is seeking an ambitious and experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to take a leading role in the design and development of base engine systems for a well-established engine manufacturing company in Derbyshire, UK. The role focuses on diesel and hydrogen combustion engine technologies, requiring strong knowledge of internal combustion engine systems and components, leadership capabilities, and extensive systems-level design experience. Responsibilities include leading the systems-level design of ICE components and subsystems, defining technical specifications, overseeing validation and verification activities, collaborating with development and test teams, and mentoring junior engineers. Candidates must hold a degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Motorsport Engineering (or equivalent) and have at least 10 years of post-graduate experience in powertrain systems design. Expertise in areas such as valvetrain design, timing gear systems, crankcase ventilation, aftertreatment systems, fuel systems (including hydrogen), and air handling systems is essential. Experience with CAD tools like Creo or CATIA and supplier management is also expected. This full-time on-site role offers a salary between £60,000 and £70,000 per year plus benefits.
