This PhD opportunity at Newcastle University focuses on Advanced Integrated Motor Drives (AIMD) as part of a prestigious £8M EPSRC Programme Grant. Students will work on the development of wide bandgap device-based integrated motor drives, advanced control techniques for next-generation drives, and innovative approaches to reducing passive components in electric drive systems, contributing to smarter, more efficient, and highly integrated electric drives central to the UK’s net-zero ambitions. The Electrical Power Group at Newcastle offers state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, cross-disciplinary mentorship, and internationally recognised research in hardware implementation and control algorithms for real-world applications. Applicants must have or expect to achieve at least a 2:1 Honours degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, and international candidates may require ATAS clearance to study in the UK. The programme is full-time, runs for four years starting October 2026, provides 100% fees coverage, and a minimum annual tax-free stipend of £20,835 for Home students, with UK and international applicants eligible to apply through the university’s postgraduate portal.
