The Machine Learning Research Engineer at Cambridge University Press & Assessment is responsible for developing, deploying, and maintaining AI-powered solutions that enhance Cambridge English products and services. This role involves optimizing and modularizing models for performance and reusability, collaborating with product, validation, and business teams to transform capabilities into impactful product features, staying updated with the latest AI and machine learning trends, and managing tasks aligned with business objectives. Candidates are expected to have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in machine learning, AI, or computer science with substantial ML components, along with at least two years of hands-on industry experience in designing, developing, and deploying ML solutions in production environments. Essential technical skills include advanced Python programming, expertise in frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow, experience building scalable AI services and automated data pipelines using Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as AWS, and strong capabilities in data analysis, model evaluation, and continuous model improvement. Candidates must also demonstrate effective collaboration in Agile/Scrum teams, excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders, and a commitment to continuous learning and applying state-of-the-art AI techniques. Desirable qualifications include a PhD, experience with NLP and speech technologies, application of ML to educational assessment and learning, hands-on experience with Large Language Models (LLMs), and contributions to patents or peer-reviewed research publications.
