The Backend Engineer III role is a technical position within Monzo’s engineering team of around 400 engineers, responsible for designing, building, and supporting parts of Monzo’s in-house banking platform. Engineers collaborate across squads and collectives—including Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Platform, Fincrime, Security & Expansion—working alongside product managers, designers, data analysts, and other engineers. This role focuses on backend development using technologies such as Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, Envoy Proxy, AWS, GCP, and React, with exposure to distributed systems and resilient software development. Responsibilities include collaborating with cross-functional teams, supporting product initiatives, contributing to open source software, and participating in knowledge sharing. Monzo offers flexible working, remote opportunities across the UK, relocation support, visa sponsorship, a learning budget, and a base salary of £75,000 - £105,000 plus stock options and benefits. Ideal candidates have strong backend experience, familiarity with strongly-typed languages, a product mindset, data-informed decision-making skills, and comfort working in ambiguous, fast-paced environments.
