About the job

The Graduate Optical Engineer role at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) in Edinburgh offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge astronomical instrumentation for both ground-based and space applications. As part of the Applied Optics Group, the engineer will engage in all stages of projects—from defining requirements with astronomers, developing conceptual designs, designing and analyzing optical systems using ray tracing software, to aligning and testing optical components in the laboratory and commissioning instruments at telescope sites. The role includes work on high-profile projects such as the ESA LISA mission for gravitational wave detection and instruments for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope, providing broad exposure to national and international collaborations. Candidates will gain practical experience in optical design, experimental testing, data analysis, and technical reporting, while developing their skills in a multidisciplinary team environment. The position is part of the STFC Graduate scheme, offering mentoring, technical training, and career development opportunities to achieve professional recognition or chartered status. The role is permanent, full-time, and offers flexible working hours, a defined pension scheme, 30 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, and access to employee benefits such as cycle-to-work schemes and learning programs. Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK at the start of employment, and sponsorship may be available through the Skilled Worker visa route with potential reimbursement of Home Office fees after employment begins.
