The Graduate Instrument Scientist position at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, offers an exciting opportunity for a science and technology enthusiast to work on world-leading astronomical instruments and systems, contributing to projects such as HARMONI for the ELT, MOONS for the VLT, LISA optical benches, and software for ALMA and the SKA. This permanent, full-time role under the STFC Graduate scheme allows candidates to develop technical and analytical skills while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists in fields including optics, mechanics, electronics, software, and systems engineering. Key responsibilities include contributing to instrumentation testing campaigns, performing specifications and requirements analysis, conducting astronomical and instrumentation research, analyzing data, preparing reports, and assisting with outreach activities at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh. The role encourages participation in national and international projects, requiring effective time management across multiple assignments, strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities, as well as a curiosity about astronomy, space science, and pioneering instrumentation. Candidates must have a minimum 2:1 degree in a relevant field, knowledge of numerical coding (preferably Python), numerical literacy, and the right to work in the UK, with visa sponsorship possible through the Skilled Worker route if required.
