About the job

Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and proud part of the University of Cambridge, is seeking a DevOps Engineer to join the Assessment API team in a permanent hybrid role based in Cambridge, offering a salary of £36,800 – £47,900. This exciting position is focused on the design, implementation, maintenance, and evolution of AWS-based infrastructure, driving reliability, scalability, and efficiency for English language assessment APIs and the services they enable. Working closely with development teams, you will apply Infrastructure as Code principles (primarily using AWS and Terraform) to automate operations, enhance system security, and build CI/CD pipelines that enable safe, rapid, and reliable software deployments. Your responsibilities will also include implementing robust monitoring, logging, and alerting systems using tools such as CloudWatch, ELK stack, Prometheus, and Grafana, managing backup and disaster recovery processes, applying security best practices, and developing automation scripts in Bash or Python for optimisation. You will provide technical guidance, promote the adoption of a DevOps culture, and document infrastructure configurations and operational procedures while mentoring colleagues in DevOps practices. As part of a collaborative engineering team, you will also participate in on-call rotations and incident response to ensure system stability and resilience. This role is ideal for an enthusiastic DevOps professional or someone in a similar software infrastructure role, with strong problem-solving skills, great communication abilities, and a willingness to learn. In return, Cambridge University Press & Assessment offers 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays, private medical and permanent health insurance, discretionary bonus, pension scheme, life assurance, green travel schemes, and flexible hybrid working arrangements. As an approved UK sponsor under the Skilled Worker visa route, international candidates are also encouraged to apply. Joining this team means being part of a diverse, inclusive, and innovative global community that embraces collaboration, growth, and continuous improvement, while contributing to impactful projects that support students, teachers, and researchers worldwide.
